AfroReggae UK Partnership - Favela to the World
Favela to the World is a 7-year programme of performances, seminars and trainings led by AfroReggae, PPP and the Barbican. The AfroReggae UK Partnership was formed in 2006 and currently includes Asian Dub Foundation Education, Barbican Bite and Barbican Education, Bigga Fish, Contact (Manchester), Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Learning Trust (Hackney), Metropolitan Black Police Association, Rich Mix, Shoreditch Trust, and Theatre Royal Stratford East.
Since 2006, the aim of Favela to the World has been to develop a programme in which young people can use the arts to explore effective means to change their world.
Making art fight for the lives of young people at risk:
AfroReggae is a Brazilian cultural group from a favela
(shantytown) in Rio de Janeiro. Forged out of the massacre of 21
people in their local community in 1993, they have gone on to establish
an international profile for their pioneering work in taking young
people out of the drug/gang culture of Rio de Janeiro's favelas
(shantytowns).
AfroReggae's success as artists has been extraordinary. Sell-out, five-star shows at London's Barbican Centre and New York's Carnegie Hall followed the invitation to open the Rolling Stones concert for 2 million people on Copacabana Beach. In addition to a touring schedule that has recently included India, South African, China, USA, and Europe, they run over 70 projects with over 3,000 young people in five favelas in Rio de Janeiro. AfroReggae balances the impact of high-quality performance with the importance of arts as a social process.
